Fall brings with it pumpkins, cozy evenings by the fire, and mugs of warm beverages. But unfortunately, it also means the onset of flu season. Here are five top tips for avoiding the flu and maintaining an office environment that promotes good health:

  1. Boost Immunity: The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) urge all adults and children 6 and older to be vaccinated for the flu by the end of October. A flu shot won’t stop all strains of the virus, but it will defend against those expected to be most prevalent each year. It’s also important to keep your immune system optimized by sleeping enough and maintaining proper nutrition (think fruits and vegetables).
  2. Practice Good Hygiene: After getting a flu shot, keeping your hands clean and germs away from your nose and mouth are the most important techniques for preventing the flu. Wash your hands with soap regularly–always before eating and after blowing your nose or shaking hands with someone. If you can’t get to a sink, disinfect with an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. And definitely avoid contact with people who are exhibiting flu symptoms!
  3. Maintain a Healthy Environment: Keep your desk organized and uncluttered so it’s easier to clean (tucking away wires with a desk caddy can help). Always have tissues available, and be sure to throw them away immediately after blowing your nose. Spray surfaces with disinfectant or use sanitizing wipes at least once a day–especially on the phone, keyboard, and mouse you touch frequently.
  4. Contain Illness & Promote Recovery: If do you start to feel unwell, go home as soon as possible to prevent spreading infection to others. Check your symptoms to see if you have the flu or just a cold. Resting may encourage a faster recovery, so try to take it easy and make yourself as comfortable as possible: a hot/cold pack can soothe aches, and a snuggly blanket wards off the chills.
  5. Stay Hydrated: Fluids are your friend when you have the flu. Herbal teas with lemon and honey can have a soothing effect on chills, coughs and sore throats. Our Looking Glass Mug is a great way to make warm beverages as beautiful as they are therapeutic.
